Post Traumatic Stress Disorder: A mental illness

Post traumatic stress disorder is a disorder where people experience some shocking, scary and dangerous event. It is natural to feel afraid before or after getting a traumatic event. It affects between 7 to 8 percent of population and women's are more affected in this mental illness than men. As time goes peoples with this disease feels more anxious and fearful. It can disrupt someone's life for years. Though treatment can help one to recover from PTSD.
People suffering from post traumatic stress disorder started experiences the symptoms within the 3 months of the traumatic event. They can feel few symptoms in the very first month such as one or more avoidance symptoms, two or more symptoms that affect mood and thinking etc. They also feel some intrusion symptoms like nightmare, fearful thoughts and many more. Avoidance symptoms, Arousal and reactivity symptoms are also common in this mental disorder. They started avoiding situations that remind the person of the event and difficulty sleeping, hypersensitivity to possible dangers, feeling tense and anxious. Feeling detached and estranged from others and emotionally and mentally numbed are also common.
Children's and adults are facing different difficulties. Children's the ages of 6 years or under that have symptoms as bedwetting after learning to use the bathroom, being clingy with an adult etc. Between the ages of 5 and 12 years children's are not able to remember the older events they have gone through earlier. They may also act out of trauma through play, pictures, and stories. They may feel uncomfortable to spend time with friends or studying. From the age of 8 years or above children usually tend to display similar reactions with adults. Between the ages of 12 and 18 years they may show disruptive or disrespectful, impulsive or aggressive behavior. Sometimes they feel insecure for not acting differently during the event. PTSD can last for long time and the symptoms are more severe and may not appear until sometime after the event.
Treatment for post traumatic stress disorder involves psychotherapy and counseling, medication, or a combination. Psychotherapy is most important treatment for trauma. Psychotherapy includes Cognitive processing therapy (CPT), Exposure therapy. Some medications are also used to control the symptoms of PTSD. Some experimental therapy such as Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), MDMA, and Cortisone hormone therapy also helps.
